Okay, look, the 80’s was a weird time for a lot of things, and that includes comics. Still though, Starro was defeated by fresh water. It’s pretty strange and a bit of a letdown compared to how powerful Starro was out of the gate, but since this was just one regenerated Starro that wasn’t as powerful as the original, we can give this a pass. From there, Green Lantern was able to come and take Starro away with the power of his ring. In order to dispatch Starro, Aquaman called upon a school of fish to come and rush fresh water into the area, which depowered Starro. ![]() Starro reveals that it had a piece of itself left from the original encounter back in The Brave and The Bold #28 that was able to regenerate into an entirely new Starro.įor some bizarre reason that isn’t quite made clear and doesn’t seem to ever come up again, Starro was too weak to do anything malicious once it regenerated, but once pollutants entered the sea it had gained its destructive power back. While it would be a stretch to say that Starro is a Napoleon level strategist at this stage in his development as a character, we can see where the name came from - a very loose similarity to the alien invasion plot point.Īfter Starro The Conqueror’s first strike against the Justice League back in December of 1959, the malicious starfish would not grace the pages of a DC comic until 1977, when Starro would return to ravage the seas in Adventure Comics #451, where the alien starfish would receive front cover treatment! Written by Venom co-creator David Micheline and legendary Batman artist Jim Aparo, the story sees Aquaman collide with Starro as he’s searching for Aquababy. The character of Tarrano himself is a Napoleon type military strategist who nearly took over three planets. That Ray Cummings’ takes place in the 25th century and is about off-world assassins taking out the three most important world leaders all at once. According to Julie, the idea for the name Starro The Conqueror came from the title of the Ray Cumming’s sci-fi pulp novel, Tarrano The Conqueror. To DC Comics fans, Julie Schwartz is probably best known for ushering in the Neal Adams and Denny O’Neil Batman era that brought grittiness to the character after the Adam West days. His original concept for the Justice League was originally just an updated version of the Justice Society, but obviously the League became much bigger than that. While Starro The Conqueror and the Justice League were developed by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky, the editor who first thought of the concept was Julius “Julie” Schwartz. Green Lantern then used his ring to pick up large quantities of lime to sprinkle on Starro, quickly defeating him. Anyway, the League figures out that Snapper Carr was immune to Starro’s powers because he had been doing lawn work and still had lime covering him. Don’t know who Snapper Carr is? You’re not alone! He was an attempt by DC to give the Justice League their own Jimmy Olsen type character, but it never really worked out. There is one person that Starro’s powers are unable to affect though, and that’s Snapper Carr. Unfortunately for the League, as they defeat Starro’s underlings, it absorbs their knowledge and learns all of the team’s weaknesses. This all takes place in the Atlantic Ocean where Starro has imbued three ordinary starfish with its power and requires most of the Justice League to intervene. This sort of thing wouldn’t fly in a DC Comic today. The first of these is how Aquaman is given a heads-up about Starro’s presence from Peter the Puffer Fish, one of the fish that Aquaman talks to. Starro’s first appearance was filled with some choices that would be baffling to modern comics readers. You read that right! Lawn care products defeated Starro The Conqueror lime specifically.
